Hi
I am new to this website and have been in tobago for little over a month :D
and have had one nasty experienc. the rest have been fantastic Its true that crime is a problem in tobago but only true if you do not follow basic commen sense.
I have extended my stay here as I I am having loads of fun. I will not recommend the [-X "Shade" my one nasty experience that put me in hospital. At the same time I could have just walked away  from the incident but when you are treated like a fool by the security who I found out later were police :? in private clothes. it was none the less a shock to the system. If you take basic precautions you will be okay and it is not only the Trinidadians that come over and do crime its the Gauyanese and locals as well.most importantly dont trust the beach bums they come to your place and case the place see what you got and will rip you off one way or the other. as for sfae places to go I am ding a list of what I have done and have my girlfried and 3 mates coming over will update on the food places to party and the people to talk to. I have loved every minute I have spent here crime and all. I am just a littlte more vigalant and aware of whats going on aound me

as you say, normal percautions should do (except for the shade maybe). at home you would not take every stranger from the bus stop to your apartment, why do so here? if you "make friends" why not meet them on the beach, in a restaurant or elsewhere... just a thought...
stay safe and enjoy your holidays
