Getting to Castara from Scarborough

Post by Jules T. »

Hello,

It's my first time posting, though this site has been a really valuable resource. My boyfriend and I will soon be traveling to Tobago. We will get into Scarborough (by ferry from Trinidad) late morning/early afternoon on a Monday. We're trying to figure out what the most economical way to get to Castara would be. I read in Rough Guide that there is a bus that runs through Scarborough to Castara. How feasible is this? Would it be better to get a taxi (how much would this be?)? Or is there another option we didn't think of...

We haven't decided yet whether or not we're going to rent a car, we'll be staying in Castara the whole time and visiting for six days. As Americans I think we're both a little weary of "other side" driving and we weren't sure if it was necessary.

Thanks so much for any information!

Jules,

For your first visit you will probably want to explore the whole island on your own and it is easier to have your own rental car. Arrange to pick it up upon arrival and you will quickly learn to negotiate the "other side". You cannot get lost; the place is too small. Just be sure to get an automatic.

Enjoy, Hugh 8)

I was having a hard time finding any car rental places based in Scarborough, mostly Crowne Point. Do you know of any based in Scarborough or would be best to take a taxis to Crown Point from the ferry and pick up a car there?

Jules, try KCNN.Where are you staying In Castara?Maybe they will come and pick you up.In any case the trip to Castara should only cost TT$100.If you take taxi from the rank--ask the fare first and ask to check the tarrif card(all licenced taxis have to have the card for their route available).

The trip should only cost $TT100 in a private taxi or a maxi-taxi? That's not bad at all... Also, we're looking at cars through sunbird. Thanks for the info!

Jules, we rent from Sunbird-as fellow Americans, we found it much easier to drive an automatic Sunny than the manual jeep-its challenging enough to drive on the other side-you don't need to add the extra challenge of navigating the steep and winding driveways common to Castara. Dianne
ps enjoy your trip
