Just wondered if anyone had done any shore fishing in Tobago? My 13 year old son is a fishing fanatic and, although I will take him deep sea, it's not something you can afford to do every day. I may take a couple of rods but can tackle be bought/hired in Tobago? Are there any well known local spots? Is there any possibility of hiring a small boat for a day or two- just inshore use but self drive? I'd be really grateful for any feedback. Thanks

Sorry for the delay, but I’ve now got a partial answer for you and my thanks to Steve Willis of Kalina for his input. “You can buy tackle here in the Mangrove Shop (near Pigeon Point) where the owner John Trim will advise on shore fishing possibilities in the vicinity. The dilapidated jetty at Plymouth is a good spot for some great fighting fish like tarpon that can be caught on a fly. No one rents self drive boats. Insurance is a problem and the current and tides are a problem to the novice and have caught the odd windsurfer or small dingy sail yachts off balance, especially from Coco Reef. (I have saved one or two people over the years – up to 2 miles out!). There is a guy called Kester Herbert at Black Rock village who takes small groups inshore and offshore fishing in all the best spots. He is a specialist in fly fishing and spinning. Kester can be contacted on (868) 639 9961 or cellphone 683 1958.” No mention of renting equipment, but I have written back for clarification. I've tried to do a bit of research on Kester and think that he charges around US$175 for inshore fishing (2 people) in an 18-foot boat; and around US$440 for 8 hours offshore (4 people) in a larger 32-footer. The only other fishing outlet I can find for Tobago is Hardplay Fishing Charters - http://www.hardplay.net. Hope this is of use.

Hi Barry, you can also try your luck directly from the "rocks" . Rock fishing is a very popular hobby for many tobagonians especially the youth. Whereever you can climb on some rocks on the caribbean coast you might catch something, just beware of the tide and the occasional big wave. A popular area is the coast between Mt. Irvine and Black Rock, try the rock formation at "Back Bay" on the left side of this beautiful beach. All you need is a simple rod and some crabmeat or fish pieces. For tricks and tips ask any of the folks you will meet there. There is also a new deep sea fishing boat on the scene, the " Blue Magic", they offer offshore and inshore trips, coastal tours and sunset cruises at competitive prices, e.g. a 4 hrs special for 75 US p.p. Their website is not up yet but you can mail us directly for details: [email protected]
