Is there an internet cafe or public internet access in Charlotteville?

I don't think there is, but at the back of my mind I vaguely recollect seeing a post very recently in the forum about eating-out in Charlotteville and mentioned that one had Internet access. However, I haven't been able to find it with a quick look, but it's worth check-in out every post for the past three weeks.

local people say Charlotteville is behind Gods back - but it really has two Internet-Cafes. One is right close to the sea on the left just before going the dirt road up to Pirate's Bay. The place is not too big, so you can hardly miss it. Just don't forget to change enough money by the airport or in Scarborough, because there is no bank in the village. But otherwise it has plenty infrastructure for being so small... Jorg

Hi Michelle,

Jorg is right on about the one internet access, in a small building on the bay side of the road, just past the Pier. It's a combination internet and dive shop.

The other one, that we used to write home, was in the main grocery store, in a small room behind the cash register. They had three computers there, with one connected to a scanner and printer. Just ask there, if the other dive-shop-internet place is closed. Seems like the grocery store stays open more often, longer hours than the dive shop.

Both were the same half hour rates, and run by web-savvy people.

Besides the two already mentioned Internet points (the one by the sea, before the dirt road going to Pirate's Bay is absolutely charming and the Rastaman very helpful and kind) there's another ona at the Banana boat bar and lodge in Cambleton a part of Charloteesville: you can reach it walking along the beach

Just wanted to know if there was any progress to getting Internet Access
from your hotel room. Steve suggested a while back to try OPUS but the dial-up access is in POS. Somewhere down the road after March of this year, someone suggested access via a number (374 12?).

Can someone refresh my memory. We are leaving on January 20th and looking forward to the warmth already!

Try TSTT 619 Easy - a tt$2.50 per minute dial up service recently launched for visitors @ (claimed!) 56kbps.

Steve may have covered this elsewhere in the forum - you will need a laptop/PC with you though, and should check the website for info:

Do you know what the cost of local calls are to POS? While the new service is to be welcomed and ideal for someone who wants a quick 2-minute email check, I believe Joanne needs something more heavyweight. Surely local call costs between Tobago and POS are a fraction of the TT$2.50 for this new TSTT service? I've just checked the TSTT site and they are quoting local rates between Scarborough and Port of Spain at 69 cents per minute daytime and 23 cents per minute evening. No contest, despite the slower speed of the Opus service.

Yes those figures are correct - you answered your own question!

I have not tested either service so cannot advise further - depends on convenience and wealth of the individual visitor I guess.

To avoid all this hassle, some luxury micro-establishments are even offering free internet access these days (albeit using own PC and not ports), although for the life of me I just can't think of one right now.....

Thanks for all the responses re: the above. Yes, we will need something more than a few minutes access periodically. Perhaps the phone rate from Crown Point to Scarborough would be more affordable than to POS.

Interserv apparently offers access via a Scarborough number but we have not been successful in e-mailing them as the address they have given on their website is incorrect: [email protected]
The e-mails keep bouncing back.

If you can help, it would be appreciated.

Yes, they have a POP in Scarborough, but only operate at 33.6Kbps (same as Opus). However, I didn't find them very helpful and they gave me no confidence that they could offer a workable solution. Apparently it was not something I could arrange in advance, and would have to go into their offices to sign-up. Their email also referred to "Their ISP", so I get the impression that they are only an agent for a larger organisation - TSTT I assume.

Anyway, try [email protected] - that's the address they replied to me on. Keep me posted, please, because it is over a year since I had any contact with them so things may have changed.
