Turtle watching in Tobago (or Trinidad)

Post by Kate Rampersad »

Hello All,

I am going to Trinidad tomorrow (second time) and i know this time a year might be an opportunity to watch the leather back turtles lying their eggs.

Have any of you had been at such trip (either with a guide on on your own?). I you have, what is the best place in Tobago to do it? Any of you seen turtles in Trinidad?

looking forward to find out as I will be in Tobago only for 5 days (with a big family of my Trini in laws), so I would like to organize something all of us could enjoy.

Kate,Courland Bay in Tobago is known as Turtle Beach, for obvious reasons. The turtles usually come at night so you have to be staying near by or willing to pay for a pickup to take you there when they come ashore

Harris McDonald, a life guard and a certified tour guide, who live in Canaan, use to arrange such a trips. You found his phone number in: /Out & About/Tour Guides. I know him since early 90´s and his a really nice person.
Depending on where you stay, he can also pick you up.

Ciao. Turtles activity this year has increased a lot. However, the amount of turtles nesting in trinidad is uncomparable. Beaches like Matura or Grande Riviere (will be on National Geographics) registered highest percentage of turtles nesting worldwide. We just came back from last weekend in Grande Riviere, and after the first night up in the dark (they are very well organize and permits and escort provided by local authority are necessary during night time), we realized that the best sight is daytime and there were so many, that we could take lots of pictures. will attach a couple.
if you need more details, let me know, will be very happy to assist you with more informations. gabriele

have tried to attach, but it says that the file (one picture is too big) max 256 Kib.
Unless Steve has a tecnical suggestion, you can send me an email to: [email protected] and will be very glad to send you turtle pictures. Sometime he beach was looking like a parking lot..... so many turtles, it is amazing!
