La Cantina

Post by PeterV »

I didn't see a topic about this restaurant, or even that many mentions of it, so I thought I'd post a bit about it.

We ate at La Cantina last night, and it was simply as wonderful as a pizza place can be. Please don't mistake this for your standard mass market pizza. This pizza is handcrafted and carefully cooked in a wood-fired oven, with a thin and crispy crust. Really outstanding.

The pizza is available with a wide variety of toppings. Their imported Italian meats (used as pizza toppings or available separately as an antipasto appetizer) are just great.

Note that the only entree served is pizza, and only 1 size (suitable for two hungry adults). So, come ready.

For accompaniment, there is a very extensive wine list (brought to us to view on a laptop) as well as beer and spirits.

The restaurant itself is very plain, with about six tables outside. There are also two or three small tables inside the restaurant (where you can watch the wood-fired oven and hang out with Stefano talking back and forth with the pizza guy in Italian).

Open for lunch 11:30 to 14:30 and for dinner starting at 18:00 (check the times, I'm reporting them from memory). Closed Wednesday.

After two weeks of eating at decent restaurants, and often finding myself adding "for Tobago" at the end of my opinion (as in "That place was good... for Tobago"), La Cantina is a world-class stop for atesanal pizza. If it was located near my home, I'd be a regular.

Peter didn't mention where La Cantina was located, but if anyone is interested in trying their great pizza (I get my pizzas there as well), it can be found in the same compound with the RBTT Bank's Crown Point branch.

Hi Peter

I hope that is not true - but I have a horrible suspicion that it is. Can anyone on Tobago please confirm this?

Haven't heard anything, but it's SO quiet here right now, I wouldn't be too surprised! I do hope not, though!

Hi Folks

I am delighted to annouce that La Cantina IS NOT CLOSED. Stefano simply went to Trinidad for a holiday over Christmas. I am so pleased - knowing how desperately quiet the island is currently and knowing how many businesses are in serious trouble, I really feared for the worst. My apologies, Stefano!

Apparently there was a notice on the door telling people that they were closed until 2nd January - and the fact that the restaurant is always closed on Wednesday. Anyway, I am delighted to confirm that the restaurant is now OPEN as usual.

Hi Steve,

thank´s for your fast clarification of facts, that´s a good news !!! :D
Sorry Stefano, if I brought a situation of confusion about that.
I´m happy that Stefano has still open.
\:D/ La Cantina is my favorite place for pizza and a good wine.

I hope the things on the island turn to the best.

Dear A Ali,
Stefano has a wide range of pizzas, including vegetarian listed on their menu. But if you don't see any combination you like, he will make one exactly to your specifications.

What previous posts have failed to mention is the fact that both Stag and Carib are on tap at La Cantina. As in draft!
Also, for the caffiene freaks, the coffee is excellent too. ( Steve Wooler please note).

Heading off to Tobago tomorrow and staying in Crown Point so La Cantina definitely on the list to visit. Sounds brilliant. I'll post a review when we get back.

La Cantina is now under new ownership, although I understand the pizza chef is staying on, at least for a while

I've just got back from two weeks in Tobago and can confirm that La Cantina is under new ownership. However, the Italian pizza chef is still there, as is Sacha the very knowledgeable waiter, and the new owner is a nice guy who mucks in and gets on with it. We ate there twice and had great meals both times. Definitely recommended.

La Cantina under new ownership but quality of pizza still as good - only problem is mosquitos - we did say to new owner that some form of burners might help, ceiling fans and different outside lighting - the little beats can be quite viscious and you need to come prepared - a little action by management will solve problem.

I just came back from T'go, and i must say i had a feast, again, enjoying some of those
tasty enormous waggon wheels of pizzas, Roberto, the man by the oven, prepared for me.
If you like it a bit hot, don't throw the normal pepper sauce on your pizza.
Ask for pepper oil, olive oil with chilli peppers soaking in it.
Sprinkle some over your pizza and enjoy !

A pity we don't have quality pizza like that here in Trinidad. One more reason to return to Tobago more often

As for the mosquitos, i didn't see, or feel, any. They may not like a Trini, or it is just that we get into
the dry season, at last.
I usually wear long pants when i go to a restaurant, that helps for bugs too, and i prefer that over
the strong scent of a cockset.

A good website, too. http://lacantinapizzeria.com/

Looks like a lot more than pizza including draft beer! Be still, my heart. We'll be there in two weeks.

We visited this wonderful pizza restaurant on our recent visit to Tobago (our first visit to Tobago but definetely not our last!). The pizza's are excellent! We made the big mistake of ordering one each and when the very friendly Italian waiter arrived with them, well, we couldn't fit them all on the table! Should have looked round at the other tables before we ordered! They were delicious though and as my husband and sons are good eaters (you'd have to be, the pizza's are enourmous) they were all soon gone. Lovely, authentic pizza on a traditional thin base. Highly recommended. Will be returning next year...
