Security Advice
Good morning, this is my first post on the forum so would really appreciate peoples views. We have studied the beautiful Island of Tobago and we are looking to visit in April this year. We are likely to be looking for a villa that has its own grounds - travelling will be myself, my wife and our two children aged 5 and 7. My query and only concern around the island is based around the potential security risks and the reported incidents of villa attacks, we are realistic and understand that these incidents are the exception rather than a regular occurance and that when travelling anywhere in the world then common sense needs to be taken with you and not left at the airport ! That said part of our holiday experience is about understanding the wildlife and the culture of a destination and having our own space from which to base ourselves from. So i guess my question is around the current Island situation and if there are any security companies that I could engage on the island to minimise any risk? Views, comments, suggestions and feedback would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance - Paul.

Re: Security Advice
Hi Paul
Welcome aboard!
These are the sort of questions I loathe answering; not simply because I don't want to discuss this negative side of Tobago (or any other holiday destination) but because it is so difficult to answer honestly and correctly. So much of 'safety' is a matter of perception. If you don't feel safe - regardless of any perceived or real danger - then your holiday will be dommed to failure.
As I understand it, you are concerned about when you are out and about and wondering if there are any security companies that could effectively provide a bodyguard. Well, no, I don't know of any such service. If in any doubt, then use the services of any of the good guides listed on this site and/or recommended by readers in this forum (one and the same, really). Being in the company of any local will hugely reduce any risk.

Re: Security Advice
Paul,
i agree to Steve's statements. There are bodyguard services in Tobago, but you don't need it here unless you have a bodyguard in your home country too. A recommended licensed tour guide will do a much better job.
If you feel you need security at night, choose your accomodation accordingly, but don't expect much from those guys but falling asleep like everybody else

Re: Security Advice
Andy / Steve - Many thanks for your advice / thoughts. I fully understand not wanting to dwell on the negative sides of what I am sure is a stunning Island, culture and people. My concerns were really around night time villa intrusion rather than personal day to day security. Having consulted with the villa owner I am more comfortable with the security arrangements and please be assured that I see the Island in no different light to any other holiday destination, or indeed any large town or city in the UK. We will be visiting the island and we are looking forward to it. We appreciate all the comments and posts on this forum, rest assured 90% of the reading is based around the wonders and positives of Tobago. I fully understand that the questions I have asked are subjective and relate to personal perceptions so really appreciate your time in providing your views. I look forward to being able to post positive comments about our experiences after our visit ! Thanks again - Paul.

Re: Security Advice
Paul,
i personally prefer burglar proof windows at night, those windows may then stay open and provide
nice cool breeze instead of the air conditioner. An electronic alarm system (possibly with perimeter sensors)
could be an asset. Many villas have that kind of protection today.
Those systems in place and properly used have you protected like in a fortress.
