Buying local sim card/Dongle

Post by LisaJ »

Hello again.

Thanks for your help in suggesting local wifi spots.

On another note, is it possible to buy a local sim card or dongle when we arrive to be able to connect to the internet elsewhere via the local network? Appreciate its not the cheapest option, but we are willing to pay for the convenience.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Hello Lisa,
it´s up where you stay.....some owners of guesthouses, hotels alow you to use there wifi.
You also can buy a local simcard/dongle to use the internet, look at the mall in Lowlands at BMOBILE.
Here are a list of wifi hotspots in T & T: http://ttcsweb.pbworks.com/w/page/11098 ... 20hotspots

Good luck :D

Lisa.....
you can check the TSTT website for mobile internet.............please klick traveler service
http://www.tstt.co.tt/ at this website.
You can also check digicell http://www.digiceltt.com/en/
a shop you can find in the mall.

Lisa,

when you go to the TSTT / BMOBILE shop, ask for "BLINK on the Go".
BLINK stands for their broadband network. There is a wireless version, but i am not really familiar how good the
service is in Tobago. It does work properly in Trinidad. The TSTT representative will be able to give advice.
"BLINK on the Go" is a device which you plug into your computer. For your GSM cell phone you can purchase a SIM card
at the same location. You cell phone should be at least tri-band, better quad-band, because TSTT/BMOBILE uses GSM 850 and 1900. With your BLACKBERRY and similar devices you will enjoy 3-G network performance.

DIGICEL stopped selling SIM cards to foreigners a while ago. I am not aware if that has changed.

Thank you ever so much - so helpful.

One last question if I may: Can a Blink on the Go be bought for a shorter period such as a month, would you know?

Kind Regards

Yes Andy,
I´ve the same question......at the website they offer only 1 or two year contracts.
I bought a bmobile simcard last May.....maybe I can use ist also in my webstick or cellphone as device for mobil internet.

Thanks for your answer

Peter :)

Lisa, Peter,

my advice was indeed not suitable for short rental periods. I just spoke to TSTT and they confirmed that there are
no longer short term contracts.
You may need to resort to a BMobile SIM card with "webstick" or connection between computer and cell phone.
This of course is much slower that Blink on the Go, because you are using the GSM/GPRS network instead of
wireless broadband. But it works.

Peter, have copy and pasted the text from a live chat I had with Bmobile which may help. Thanks Andy for you help.

Hello, I am travelling to Tobago next month for a holiday. We require internet access while we were there. The blink on the go system looks ideal but we only need it for the short term, such as 2 weeks, or a month perhaps. Is this a service you offer? Thank you

ajohnso, I do apologise for the incovenience however our Blink on the go service is postpaid and requires a contract. It is not available monthly. There is a prepaid Blink on go service which is $599.00 TT as a one time charge and you can purchase data usage.

Lisa: That sounds like a possibilty.....so we would pay $599TT, and then how much is the data usage?

Lisa : Also, is this something I can go into a store an buy when we arrive for it to work instantly once we have set it up at our accommodation in Tobago?

ajohnso: You can get 400mb of usage for $100TT .

ajohnso: You can visit any Bmobile office to purchase the modem.

Lisa : Brilliant....and then we just plug it into our laptop wherever and we are good to go straight away?
ajohnso: That is correct.

P.s Which would you recommend as the most reliable BMobile outlet in Tobago to buy this package from? BMobile themselves recommended the Caroline Building in Scarborough?

Sorry to have asked so many questions. Unfortunately we still need to do some work during our hols and using mobile boradband will just make it more relaxing for us.

Thanks again

Lisa,

strange that the BLINK-Lady on the phone didn't tell me that. I hope they know what they really sell
If i get a chance within the next days i will check the office and inquire about the prepaid BLINK on the Go.

TSTT head office in Scarborough (Caroline Building, corner Wilson Road and Claude Noel Highway) is certainly
the best place to go.

Peter.
In Nov. they told us at DIGICELL ,that the sim card we are bying is only valid for 5 months. So what i bought last year we could not use in nov, and we had to by new sim card. But we bought new sim card on Digicell in Nov. Hopefully we can use them in Marts, because we have only 2 months to go again. :D

Hi Andy,

It was only by chance I saw this tiny ad on an independent providers website about the prepaid service....and then I was waiting about 15 mins for her to actually check and answer me, so its no surprise you were told differently. Luck of the draw I guess!

Hi Susanne

As I have a Digicell phone when I'm in Tobago, I can confirm that when the phone isn't in use for a longer time, the SIM-card does not work next time you arrive to Tobago. Than you have to but a new SIM-card wich also means that your phone get a new phone number!
