Appropriate attire and Tobago tourist fashions

Post by Richardus »

Since All Heather and I have done in the past ten years is work, all we have for clothing is work clothing. This will not do for our debut trip to Tobago, we must go out and attain a Tobago wardrobe! So, before our trip we will be doing some major clothes shopping. So, here is the question for Tobago addicts, what would you suggest for appropriate attire for the various activities in Tobago when we go?

-I understand a modern swimswuit for starters, I dont think speedo is the way to go anymore

-Attire for touring and field trips, such as the nature hikes and backroad adventures

-Attire for evening entertainment and dining, in our local resort as well as some of the finer eating establishments.

Do they wear Tilley hats there? Seriously, we need some suggestions as to recent fashions for tourists there!

It's perfect! At least, it will be perfect after several of those rum drinks they are going to serve me!

Actually I DO like the guy's straw hat. I would get one of those.

Richardus,

you best refer to Information/General Information/Packing on this site.

Casual and (on evenings) elegantly casual wear is perfectly ok for Tobago.
Gentlemen should generally wear long pants for dinner in a restaurant and night entertainment. Jeans may be ok
in certain places. Unless you visit an air-conditioned place, this not only to match the dress code but also for
protection from mosquitos and sand flies.
Your lady may want to wear long pants too or proper insect repellant instead.

There is absolutely no problem with Tilley hats. It definately belongs to a cricket uniform, but you may very well
wear it on the road.

Haha, ok thank you Andy, I'm curious about the jeans. Do you mean jeans will not protect you from bites as well as regular slacks in air conditioned places? I always thought Jeans would offer better protection being thicker.

I was thinking trousers for any evening out, and jeans for when we do the tours, unless there will be boating and swimming involved in which case I may wear golf shorts. I was joking about the Tilley hat, I dont actually have one, but it seems like it would work so maybe I'll consider buying one.

For shirts, I've never been one to wear loud colours so perhaps opaque but new polo style shirts.

Hmm.. more to think on this one, I'll consult the website again!

Richardus,

Jeans are indeed a better protection against mozzies than regular slacks. Whereever it is appropriate, wear jeans once
you are in the open at night. Certain areas in Tobago like Bon Accord and Buccoo have quite aggressive mozzies and
careless clothing can easily spoil an otherwise romantic dinner for two

Polo shirts are certainly a good choice and accepted everywhere except for formal functions.

Ok! Looks like a mosquito to me! Must be the British translation :)

Up north we often refer to them as "skitters" too :P
