Meat for BBQ

Post by Rob G »

We are planning a BBQ at our Villa in Bon Accord an I would like to know the best place to buy meat. I was in the Penny Savers in Canaan and the selection was somewhat limited. Is there a butcher shop or a market with a better selection? How about fish?

Where does one find charcoal to use in the BBQ? Is that the fuel that is used here or is it something else?

Hi Rob

Nice and convenient for you (assuming you have a rental vehicle) is the Golden Grove Farm Shop. This butcher their own stock and have other good imported stock. I DON'T recommend their sausages if you intend slapping them on the barbeque though - we nearly set a villa on fire last March when the sausages went up in flames. The beefburgers were the best I've ever tasted though and the steaks acceptable (don't expect decent steaks by North American standards anywhere in the southern Caribbean).

The best way to find the Golden Grove is possibly via our Satellite Map. Select Tobago > Maps & Regions from the menu bar at the top of the page then click on the Satellite tab (or on the image in the centre of the page). The Golden Grove is on the default page, so after the map and markers have downloaded, switch off all the markers EXCEPT the Food Stores. The red icon for the farm is almost in the middle of the page. Hover over it for the name and click for further info. You can then switch on the villas and identify where you will be staying and zoom in to see the best route to the shop.

Have fun!

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the prompt reply. We have a rental car and should not have any trouble finding it.

Any thoughts on where I might find some charcoal for the BBQ?

RT Morshead Supermarket has individually vacuum packaged US Angus steaks. they're very very good but expensive. They should also have charcoal.

The Pennysaver at Canaan had packages of charcoal earlier this week (first time I had ever seen..aisle with the bugmats, insect sprays). It's on the way to Golden Grove and probably a lot cheaper than Morshead. BTW, Golden Grove is open on Sundays from 8-10am; in case you missed them today and is definitely the place to get BBQ stuff or any meat supplies. Enjoy!

Having just returned from 2 weeks we used Golden Grove Farm Shop for the BBQ. We found the lamb chops chicken portions and steak excellent.
We also bought packs of mince meat and made our own burgers (well my wife did) - again excellent. If you have a rental car it's well worth the visit.
