Ideas for a romantic Birthday Present??

Post by Joe King »

Hello all,

Firstly let me say Steve that this website is a gem and a credit to you!!

My fiancee and I are going to Tobago in May for our Honeymoon. Her birthday falls in the middle of our stay in Tobago and I want to do something really romantic. One idea I have had is to try and hire a boat for the evening and go for a romantic cruise and dinner on-board. Does anyone know if there is a company in Tobago that offers such a service, and if so roughly how much would it cost?

I am open to any alternative suggestions too, so if anyone has done anything special for a lady while in Tobago please let me know!!

Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe

Thanks for you kind words.

You could probably arrange an evening cruise with one of the boat operators (see our Sailing article), but I don't believe any of them offer evening cruises. Sailing along the coast of Tobago would not be as attractive as a European river cruise. Dinner on board would be a no-no, unless you fancied a big bib around you necks - which would not be exactly romantic. However, I'm the first to admit that I am unlikely to be picked for any list of romantic thinkers, so hopefully some of our other readers and contributors will have a few suggestions.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your quick response.

I found a link for King David Tours elsewhere in the forum, would you recommend them?? Davids website is quite impressive and his sunset cruise followed by private beach BBQ sounds perfect, does anyone know anything about, or ever taken, this tour??

Also I noticed in the forum that there is construction work started/starting at the airport, does anyone know anything about this?? We are staying at the Toucan Inn which I understand is right beside the airport. Will we be kept awake at night by Jack Hammers and the like?!?!?!

Hi Joe

Can't say I've heard any reports about King David Tours, good or bad. Hopefully someone else will be able to comment from personal experience.

I would be most surprised if you could hear any construction work sounds at night from the Toucan Inn for two reasons: a) becuase the Toucan Inn may be near the end of the runway, but it is not near the terminal building where the main work will be going on, and b) the thought of any construction work going on after sunset in Tobago (other than bar/catering staff) highly amuses me. No, I'm pretty sure this will not be a problem to you in any way or form.

Hi Joe

Do you hail from anywhere near Ballinasloe, my old ma's home town? If yes, maybe you know my Uncle Vivion with bad hips? - such a small town.

Anyway, I digress.

The usual spot for a beach BBQ is No Man's Land - fine if you have it almost to yourselves, but it won't be romantic if another crowd is having a lime there.

Harris Macdonald took a few of us to Lovers Bay Beach near Charlottesville, only accessible by fishing boat and surrounded by steep rocks with a skorkellable (?) reef right there. He is well connected and am sure he could sort a sunset BBQ or cook up for you, then return an hour or so later in his brother's boat to collect you - wouldn't cost the earth plus he has transport. The beach is not overlooked, if you catch my drift...

Hope the wedding goes well
Regards

King David Tours

Joe

I have used King David Tours (based in Castara) for the last 2 years and I would certainly recommend them.

Not wise to eat on boat ... but they will be very flexible and take you to any of a range of secluded beaches.

They will provide you with drinks and cook your meal for you on the beach and even leave you there on your own if you want and return at an agreed time.

David Williams himself will agree terms and any special requirements you have and he will advise you accordingly.

You can email him on [email protected] and sort it all out ... if you do ... please say that the Tallets send their regards.

Thank you to both Paul and Glyn.

Glyn on the Ballinasloe thing, We live in Oranmore, so I'm afraid I dont know your Uncle... sorry!! About Harris Macdonald, do you have any contact information for him? plus is he Scottish :?: , the surname suggests that to me, my Fiancee is a Scot.

Again thanks for all the help

Hi Joe

Somehow I doubt if Harris has any Celtic blood in him - he is a huge Tobagonian Senior Lifeguard, with arm muscles the size of my waist before I discovered beer, but he is very funny and would probably wear a Kilt if asked!

Say hi to Galway for me anyway, fond memories of the greenery, colleens etc etc.

Harris' email is:

[email protected]

Please let us know what if the Lovers Bay Beach/other works out - "romance" is an occasional question in the forum, given Tobago's ideal wedding/honeymoon attributes.

Best wishes

Harris is one of the funniest people I have ever met and certainly gave myself and my family a trip to remember. You are sure to have a good time with him.

With whoever you'll go on a romantic boat trip, a very romantic place can be the laggoon, when the pelicans come in in the evening. they have their sleeping trees there and if you have a nice bottle of champagne and a beautiful sunset, the laggoon can do the rest!
Wish you a good trip!
