Adventure Farm & Nature Reserve

Post by Joanne Green »

We recently spent a delightful morning at the Adventure Farm. It's located just south of Arnos Vale Hotel. the owner, Ean Mackay, has spent 27 years developing the 5 acre reserve & putting all sorts of plants in to attract various species of birds. He finally opened it to the public a few years ago. The cost is US$5 per person.

Dick & I aren't knowledgable birders by any stretch of the imagination, but we really enjoy watching them. Ean has provided the ultimate "no-brains" birding experience!! One merely sits in comfort on the veranda of his house. The eaves are lined with hummingbird feeders & he's been able to entice 5 of the 6 varieties found on Tobago to the feeders. They're so used to people, that you can get quite close & Dick got some great photos. About ten feet from the veranda is a series of logs sticking up with wooden spikes on them. Ean puts banana bits on them & then goes over and rings a bell. It's rather like Pavlov's Box -- the birds absolutely flock to the area!! We sat there absolutely entranced. There are also pathways through the property that you can walk to see other birds, but frankly, we were more than satisfied with what we saw from the veranda.
