Waterfalls

I believe the waterfalls in the rainforest are very attractive. Which one is best to visit in January with reasonably easy access.

Hi Mike

In my opinion, the Highlands Waterfall near Moriah is by far the best - but you do need a local guide to get there, both for security and because you are unlikely to find it on your own. The Castara waterfall is very pleasant and just a short walk from the village, so is one that you can visit on your own.

We had a lovely walk into HIGHLAND Falls last week. We did get a couple of local kids guide us in the first time (in 2014), but every other visit to the falls has been easy to find the path. Beware the tied off bull and cows though. tread carefully. Proper footwear is required as there can be muddy patches, and some minor stream crossings at 2 points in the hike.

I second the CASTARA Falls recommendation, as it is very accessible, only a 5 minute walk over some minor rocky patches. But due to its proximity to Castara Beach, it usually has a half dozen folks enjoying the space.

Highland is almost guaranteed that you will get the space to yourself, and the hike in is not too difficult to follow from the bridge, don't drive up too far though, the road gets rough. We love the 'private water fall for the afternoon' aspect of Highland Falls. We saw a guide leading a small group in as we were hiking out last week.

Also, Green Hill Waterfall is accessible by road near the Water Reservoir. It's not for swimming, but there are a few benches to sit and relax, and the falls has an easy way to walk down to the bottom, via stairs.

Just visited Castara Falls. Older folks need to be aware that you have to cross the stream a couple of times on the way using available stones or rocks. The falls are worth the short walk though.
