Work Permit help?

Post by J. Tomasulo »

Hi ya'll. I know I'm taking the easy way out for now, but I thought I'd ask you all for some help before I research this a little more in-depth.

I was in Tobago for a while in Mar/Apr of this year training (I'm a golf profession) at the Plantions Golf Course. I became very good friends with Director of Golf and at the end of the stay, was told I am welcome back anytime which was great to hear. The d.o.g. had told me before I left that if I could get my hands on a work permit, they would find me some work at the course, so I would be able to extend my stay for the next time I visit.

I have this website

http://www.gov.tt/faq/default.asp#workpermit

Do you think that my chances are good? I'm very curious to see how this works out.

Work Permit

Post by Rachel Crew »

If you want to apply for a work permit be prepared to put in a lot of time and paperwork.... and start stocking up on patience now!

As well as the work permit application form - part of which has to be completed by your prospective employer - you will need copies of ALL your qualifications, a police reference and two character references (among other things - the full list is on the application form).

However, what they don't make clear on the form is that your prospective employer also needs to advertise the position you are applying for AND make the case that there are no suitable local candidates for the job. This is not easy!!

You can enlist the services of a local solicitor specialising in immigration issues - I know of several people who have worked with a Mr Wheeler - and although this may cost a little it may help to smooth your road. If you are granted a work permit, you will also have to put up a bond which is supposed to pay for return ticket to your country of origin, should the need arise (I am not sure of the current amount required).

Please also be aware that if you arrive in Tobago intending to apply for your work permit while you are here - if the work permit is then not granted for whatever reason you will be required to leave Tobago immediately - even if you have come in on a visitor's visa.

Hope this gives you some idea of what is required.... Don't mean to depress you but you did ask!!

Thank you for the reply Rachel Crew. I do appreciate it and the permit won't be for another year or so. I have plenty of time and I do have all the patience in the world as I am a Professional Golfer, lol.

I love challenges and this seems like a good one to tackle. I do have friends down there that work for the government that have told me that they will help with the process as much as they can. I understand things are a little different down there, especially how I saw it with my own eyes when I was down there.

I will keep you all posted on the process.

Thanks again,

Justin
