Can anyone suggest a good Travel Insurance provider? Or on the flip side any to avoid?
Also, does anyone know if you need extra cover if you go diving?

Hi David
There is a section on travel insurance in the information section of the homepage.
Many, if not most, bog-standard travel insurance policies will specifically EXCLUDE diving. It is classed a dangerous pursuit, for obvious reasons and this also may apply to activities like kite surfing, wind surfing, surfing and even horse or motor cycle riding.
My advise (as an independant insurance adviser) is to consult an independant insurance adviser. Get them to find a policy that specifically allows you to add on dangerous pursuits, but you will probably need to provide your PADI cert and details of the depths that you intend to dive.
By the way, just because you have disclosed that you intend to dive, it doesn't mean to say that you will be covered for other hazardous activies.
My advise would be to only accept a 'household name' insurance company.
That's not to say that there aren't many good lesser- known companies, but I have heard horror stories of 'Trotter's Independant Insurance' providing less than adequate service in the face of a claim. You don't need extra grief, if you have already suffered bad luck.
Follow the guidelines in the information section and you shouldn't go wrong.
Cheers
Steve

Thanks Steve,
I haven't got a PADI cert - yet. I am going to do the PADI Open water course while i'm out there. Is it correct the maximum you can dive to with that is 18 meters? In which case i will tell the insurance people that.
Thanks for your advise.

Hello David
We have for the last 2 yrs, had a family (2 adults 2 kids) worlwide travel insurance with Egg. This covers all the normal things as well as cover for winter sports and scuba diving. Great value at around £95 a year.
Where are you doing your PADI? Last year we did ours with MantaDive on the road to Pigeon Point and would highly recomend them.

Hi Andy and Dave,
The vis in Tobago is much much better than the UK. Last November after 3 solid days of rain the vis was as bad as a good UK dive (if the makes sense).
One option you have got with the PADI OW course is to do the paper work and the pool dives in the UK and just the sea dives on holiday saves taking 2 days of your holiday with your nose stuck in a diving course book.
On the insurance front the dive school insurance will cover you for your course and if your not covered by your normal holiday insurance have a look at the DAN insurance. http://www.daneurope.org. it is purely dive medical and emergency cover.
Regards
Kevin
