Toucan is So So
First off, I'm a Trini expatriate based in the US. We stayed at the Toucan Inn in July for a few nights. We had a quiet garden room, which was clean and had a beautiful decor (dark wood furniture and similarly framed french doors and walls, opened up to a beutiful garden. The red clay tile floor was a nice touch also). But the amenities were poor; Tobago is very beautiful and so is my spouse, but together they weren't enough to make up for the lack of cabletv in the rooms
Also the shower and sink, were pathetic (water conservation?) the single nightstand was across the room from the bed, the switches for the wall mounted bed side lamps were not reacheable from the bed, and the bed itself was uncomftable, and we got 2 twins, though we asked for a full. Given most guests we saw at the hotel were couples, I find this inexplicable. We never used the pool though it was a nice back drop to the restaurant, the food at which was fair; the roasted foul was excellent, but the bacon rapped chicken wasn't as good, breakfast was a dissapointment; why isn't fresh squeezed orange juice without ice possible on a caribbean island where the fruit is grown
The staff were polite enough but we were slighted (ignored) by the manager at the "meet & greet" This slight was made all the more evident when, at a later night, we had dinner at the Kariwak Village restaurant, and the owner came over to our table to thank us for dining there and invited us to tour the grounds
. If you plan to be out most of the day and night, and simply need a clean place to rest your head for a few hours, and an ok dinner, then Toucan is your place. Toward that end, a car is a must, don't delude yourself , 5 mins walk to the beach? I don't think so. Plus you can beach hop and sight see at your leisure, Just stay on or near the coast roads or you might get lost as we did, Higlight of our trip though. My $.02 FWIW. Have fun.

Where to start!!!
We completely disagree with almost everything you have said!!! Of course you may have just had a bad experience but, as a general rule the Toucan Inn is a fantastic spot!!
Cable TV, why go on holiday in Tobago if you want to watch TV??????
What amenities did you expect?? A pool table or a supermarket beside the hotel???
While we were there, the shower and sink were far from pathetic.
All our bedside lamps were 'Bedside Lamps' with the switch on them?!?!?!
The bed was more comfortable than our own bed at home although it was a genuine double bed!!!!
From a couple who used the pool every day, it didn't just look fabulous... it was fabulous!!!!
The food on our first night was slightly below standard, but it was very busy, and on every occasion after this it was of the highest quality.
Breakfast was faultless every day, we would love to hear what you didn't like about it???? Fresh squeezed Orange Juice... I would love to go somewhere that it is available, it is just impractical as far as running an efficient restaurant goes.
The manager, Troy, is a lovely man. He is somewhat shy so maybe you mistook shyness for ignorance. He was always very friendly and obliging whenever we had a query.
As far as the walk to the beach goes, even strolling to the beach it was no more than 5-7 minutes!! If you wanted 5 star luxury and a beach on your doorstep why didn't you go to Coco Reef???
And what does FWIW mean????????????????????

No need to shout, I hear you
I thought online etiquette suggests that New posters are politely welcomed before shouted at
“We completely disagree with almost everything you have said!!! Of course you may have just had a bad experience but, as a general rule the Toucan Inn is a fantastic spot!!”
Our review was simply factual, and objective. May I respectfully suggest Joe, you’re being subjective. We actually had a fun time in Tobago, notwithstanding our issues with the Toucan Inn. I wouldn’t go as far as you and say the Toucan Inn was fantastic, but neither would I (and didn’t) say the place was trash, far from it.
“Cable TV, why go on holiday in Tobago if you want to watch TV??????”
Some people consider reading a good book relaxing, which incidentally is what the receptionist recommended when we asked why no catv in the rooms. Some consider posting unsolicited opinions on internet chat forums relaxing
others like keeping abreast of current issues on CNN, to each his own.
“What amenities did you expect?? A pool table or a supermarket beside the hotel???”
I trust u understand what amenities are so I conclude you’re being sarcastic.
“While we were there, the shower and sink were far from pathetic.

Its clear you had a better room than ours.
“From a couple who used the pool every day, it didn't just look fabulous... it was fabulous!!!!"
I’ll take a page out of your book and ask why go on vacation to a beautiful caribbean isle with lovely beaches to then swim in a pool????

A trip to the local farmers/central market would prove you wrong about the impracticality of fresh squeezed orange juice, you could peel and squeeze them at the market yourself, or do as the locals and “suck the orange”
As the roasted foul showed, when locally or regionally grown foods and local dishes are used the results are more authentic and tastier. Maybe we should’ve of opted for the local breakfast.
“The manager, Troy, is a lovely man. He is somewhat shy so maybe you mistook shyness for ignorance. He was always very friendly and obliging whenever we had a query.”
we were ignored at the “meet & greet” I assure you.
“As far as the walk to the beach goes, even strolling to the beach it was no more than 5-7 minutes!!”
Seemed longer especially after a long swim.
“If you wanted 5 star luxury and a beach on your doorstep why didn't you go to Coco Reef???”
couldn’t afford a room there and the car together.
“And what does FWIW mean????????????????????”

Hi D
My apologies firstly for not welcoming you to the forum, you and your opinions are of course very much welcome on the forum. And of course you are correct when you say that your views are 'objective' and 'factual' from your point of view and my views are probably subjective. But there again this is one of the few places on the internet where you get will get both subjective and objective wviews on different topics and queries.
I would suggest that the Toucan Inn is not for the 'discerning traveller', it is a basic 2 star establishment, although I would suggest that Troy and his team can not be far from attaining 3 star standard.
By the sounds of it you unluckily received one of their poorer rooms, and yes twin beds in any Carribean resort are somewhat disappointing especially when a double was requested.
Coming from a Hotel and Catering background, can I re-iterate that providing freshly squeezed Orange Juice is a time consuming and expensive task, and therefore to run an efficient restaurant it would be a no-no in my consideration.
D, we also like to see some positive reviews on myTobago, so please do not forget to post any positive views abour Tobago. Negative experiences always leave a bigger mark on a person, but it is the positives reviews that will get people visiting/returning to Tobago.
Nice to meet you too D

Hi
I'm sorry to here that you had such a bad stay. I thought the Toucan was fab and for a 2 star had all the amenities I needed. (I can't remember what facilites are required for each star rating but I'm pretty sure tv isn't expected in a two star) but we felt the hotel certainly exceeded the expectations given the star rating. Maybe we were lucky with rooms too - my parents were in twin beds but just pushed them together, but some friends of ours were in a double.
5 mins to the beach is possible depending on how fast you walk, we go at a fair pace and averaged around 10 mins because we were dawdling, and a little slower on the way back because we'd been lazing on the beach and we often stopped for water on the way back too.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Troy too, we probably monopolized him a bit when we were there but he did mention he tried to see everyone, so I hope the fact you felt ignored didn't ruin your trip too much.
As for the breakfasts we were probably quite tricky every morning and they always accommodated us with a smile.
We hired a car for one of the days we were there to explore the island, and as we were visiting friends we probably took more taxis/ lifts with friends than planned but we were there for a wedding, but even when we were driving we tried to walk around the area for around an hour most evenings. We even used our pre booked taxi to take the luggage to check in then walked back from the airport and back again when it was time to fly, so I guess we liked the walk.
Glad you liked Kariwak - possibly the best meal of my life there!
