We had a great time at the Le Grand, the service was great the food was good and the staff were so friendly, I even took to the spa treatments, and yes Steve the peppermint bath was something else.
OK so there were a few cats and chickens that got under your feet in the bar, but you couldn't say the place wasn't clean.
We had a splendid time working our way down the cocktail list in both bars.... only we didn't make it ....We kept going back to ones we liked, but it was great fun trying. We walked round the Grafton estate many time during our stay, what a wonderful place, got great photos of the birds.
On two days we had the service of Newton George, what a fantastic chap, we met him again at the Birdfair just the other weekend, anyway the first day he took us around the rain forest, where it rained nonstop...WELL IT'S A RAIN FOREST!!, what an experience, absolutely brilliant. On the second day on our way to Speyside for the Little Tobago trip,he took us back to the forest to get the birds we missed the previous time.THANKS NEWTON!
What else can I say but many thanks Steve for an exultant site it really helped prepare us for a truly great holiday.

Welcome back. I am so delighted that you had a great trip.

Your comment about cats and chickens in the bar at Le Grand intrigued me. I assume you're referring to the Beach Bar? This was not something we experienced.

Yes, isn't Newton George a lovely guy. It's not just that he's so at one with nature and so obviously expert about the birds, it's equally that he's such a nice man. The wonderful thing about Newton is that he would be out in the rain forest studying the birds even if he didn't have any visitors with him. No wonder he's the finest birding expert on the island.

Now you can start plannng for a return

Just to add, we also met Newton.

Saw him at Jemmas with another party, and then bumped into him at Arnos Vale (watching Hummingbirds).

I'm guessing Newton is the big fella with an RAF style tash and always wearing a tie?

The description you give is not that of any Tobagonian I've ever met. This is Newton (baseball cap makes him look younger than his years):

I have video of my fella, will try and screen grab him!

He is a cab driving bird nut. I remarked because he was always wearing a tie when I saw him, he said that he considers himself an ambassador for the country as a cab driver so he dresses accordingly.

No, I didn't think so. Newton doesn't drive a taxi. He's now a full-time bird tour guide. He is still attached to the Forestry department though - one of Tobago's only Forest Rangers. This guy lives and breathes the rainforest - it's HIS forest.

I don't know your taxi driver, but he so typifies Tobago. That's what I love about the island. I'd but everything I own on the fact that he truly believes he is an ambassador for Tobago. Sadly the youngsters are losing that same pride - but they've got a long way to go to match so many of the same generation over here, thank heavens.
