Hi Dale
Welcome aboard! If going to Tobago from Guam, you have got to win first prize for coming from furthest location.
I recall someone saying in a thread during the last week or two that the last flight over is a little after 9pm. I haven't had confirmation of this and thought it was a little later. If anybody knows (HINT, HINT!!!!!) please let us know.
There's been various threads about stop-over accommodation near Piarco airport in Port-of-Spain. None of it good, I'm afraid. Use the search facility above, but one thread you might want to check out is http://www.mytobago.info/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2694

The Piarco International Hotel, which we've relied on for the past few years for our overnights in Trinidad, unfortunately has closed in the past few months. A woman I know called the hotel directly and was sadly told it had closed. It was a clean, secure, and welcoming hotel, and I'm surprised it has closed, as it seemed to have plenty of customers, including some flight crews.
Unless it reopens before our next visit in February, we will make the trek into Port of Spain and stay at the Hilton. It's a 20-mile drive, so not as convenient (and more expensive, with taxi fare) as the Piarco, but given the options available, it's where we will go. The Trinidad Hilton rooms are reported to be dated, but I haven't heard complaints about cleanliness.

What about the Airport View Guesthouse? It's listed on the Tidco website, but has none of it's own. It is 2 minutes from the airport, provides shuttle service, has 17 rooms & is airconditioned. Their email address is: [email protected] & their phone #is: 868-669-4186. Has anyone ever stayed there? Comments?

We stayed at the Kapok Hotel (http://www.kapokhotel.com) in Trinidad during Carnival several years back. It's 30 minutes from the airport. Standard rooms are small, but acceptable. Superior rooms and suites are also available. Great Chinese restaurant on the top floor, and a nice jazz bar/restaurant on the bottom.

About the Airport View guest house: I've done a lot of Googling for info about hotels near Piarco Airport. I haven't been able to find many reviews for the Airport View -- but the ones I have found have not been good. The last one I read -- maybe it was on the Lonely Planet site or wheretostay.com -- said that there were bedbugs; the writer said she and her husband left the hotel upon that discovery and were forced to spend the night in the airport itself.
I'm quite sad that the Piarco Intl. Hotel is gone. I'm hoping it will reopen, rather than the facility just standing abandoned. I've also read good reviews of the Kapok, as Keeler mentioned. But, like the Hilton, it's not as convenient to the airport.

To be honest even the Trinidad Hilton has bugs. My friend stayed at the Normandie Hotel (I believe they have a website) and he said it was fine. They have a great restaurant, one of the best shopping malls nearby and also close to the airport. I will be staying at the ASA Wright Nature Centre for a couple of days in December, it is over one hour from the airport but I have heard it is worth the trip.

We stayed at the Asa Wright in 2003 SUPERB wonderful food who could wish for a better place to stay over night if you would like some easy directions a friend of mine in Trinidad sent me some and for a person from the UK found them easy to follow. I am sure I still have them. When there we were in a room next to Mr & Mrs Ffrench The birds of Trinidad and Tobago.
Go enjoy the birds are wonderful as are the staff do go on a guided tour if you can.

Thank you very much for your post. Makes me even more excited to get there. All arrangements have been made through a company based in the US called Caligo. I have booked a trip to the Caroni Swamp, but not much more since Tobago is all I have on my mind and possible opportunities there. I AM HOOKED ON THIS SITE!!

I called Yes Tourism & asked if they knew of a decent place near the airport & they recommemded Leo's Place. It's a small B&B 8 minutes from the airport. Some of the five rooms are airconditioned and have private bath. Cost is between $35US & $50US. For a nominal cost, Leo will pick you up & take you back to the airport the next day. He only takes cash. His phone# is: (868) 640-0117, & the email is: [email protected].
