Castara region

Post by Patricia Green »

We are going to Tobago for the 1st time in December and although urged by friends to stay in the South we like the reports we've read on this site about apartments in Castara as some of them seem to be almost directly on the beach and we'd like to spend our 1st week there before moving further South to maybe the Enchanted Waters for our 2nd week. Can anyone recommend any apartments that are by the beach but with 1 or 2 bars/places to eat within walking distance? Any ideas from you would be appreciated. Many thanks. Pat[/b]

Most accomodation is within sight of the beach ... if you want it RIGHT ON THE BEACH, try the Naturalist Beach Resort.

This is a small guesthouse within paces of the beach and the manager, Ancle, has just built the Blue Marlin apartment which is ... literally ... ON THE BEACH.

The apartment is on 1st floor level and underneath there is a juice bar and (so Ancle tells me) an Internet Cafe.

There are plenty of other bars/cafes in Castara.

If you want to see how close to the beach the Blue Marlin is and see photos and details of who to contact then go to ... http://tobago.wheretostay.com/property/601.html#review

I personally prefer the sea view porch but this is often booked up many months in advance.

There are several holiday lets (they're not all apartments) very near or on the beach in Castara and within a short (if sometimes steep) walk to several bars and eating places. (I counted seven eating places in Castara - but two were shut the whole time throughout our two weeks and some of the others are sometimes open and sometimes not and an eighth one was near to completion.)

It's difficult to know which one would suit you best to make a recommendation. The ones I know of that are very near-by or on the beach are The Beach House, The Blue Mango, Sealevel Guest House and as Paul says, The Naturalist Beach Resort, Alibabas' new apartments, Alibaba's Sea Breeze just above the north beach, due for completion in November and Castara Retreats, about 75 yards up a steep path from the south beach. There may be others near the beach that I don't know about?

Whilst pondering a return I am mindful that Castara is the one place we never really saw. We stopped very briefly, felt a bit intimidated (not for any reason other than the oft-quoted fact it's far less hotel-laden etc than other resorts on the island) and drove on.

We saw the beach from a boat trip and never made Pirate's Bay.

I loved Englishman's Bay and due to choppy seas the day we went I want to return there to snorkel (having heard post holiday it's well worth it).

I'm now toying with a week in Castara, so thanks for this thread re apartments - especially the nod for Blue Marlin!

snorkeling in Castara

Post by Gisela Grell »

Hi all,

if you like to snorkel at the Englishmans Bay you shoud try the small bay in Castara. You jump into the water and you are standing in the middle of the corals.

I saw squids, stingrays, little (very little) sharks and a lot of other beautiful and colourful fishes very close to the beach.

And don't forget to try the Rumpunch at the Boathouse and say hello to Brentonovic from me

Cheers
