money - what sort and how much

Post by Sue B »

Please be gentle with me, although I have been loking at the site for many weeks, this is the first time that I have dipped my toes into the ‘Mytobago’ forum. I hope I've arrived at the right place :? .
With the help of this brilliant resource and many hours of research, we have booked our first holiday to Tobago in February; flying with Excel – will it be the new plane?, will we be on time?- don’t know, we’ll find out in due course.
We will be staying in Castara at the Beach House; We have arranged to be picked up at the airport by Porridge, and will probably hire a vehicle for some of the time – but will leave those questions for another day. . . .
Today’s question is: How much cash and travellers cheques and in which denominations do we need? We understand that we will get a better exchange rate in Tobago than we will get in the UK, however:
Do the bars/restaurants in Castara take credit cards/ travellers cheques?
Is there anywhere in Castara to change money?
If we take travellers cheques are we better with US$ cheques than sterling ones.

Reckon its about 54 days ‘til we go and we’re counting everyone of them =P~

Hello Sue,

We have just returned from Tobago, and we took TT dollars in cash, other than that we paid with credit cards, no problems whatsoever. Lucky you still looking forward to a wonderful holiday, have a great time, regards, Sue. 8)

We never found anywhere in Castara to change money - I can't say there isn't anywhere though, but I wouldn't bank on it (ha ha!). Most of the eating places and rum shops in Castara are small and some certainly don't take credit cards. We took TT $s and travellers cheques and visited Scarborough half way through when we changed some travellers cheques.

Hi,

when I wanted to change traveller cheques in Charlotteville, I was sent from one person to the next ("No, I don't change them, but (he/she) will certainly do it"). After 2 hours I gave up and took a bus to Scarborough. I think, it will be the same situation in Castara.

Greetings,

Achim

Sue B hello from sunny Castara,I am there now and the only place that takes CC's is theCascreole restaurant and then only over a certain amount(run up a tab!).Every one else is cash or (accommodation TC'S).The nearest ATM is at Pleasant Prospect otherwise it's Scarborough or Crown Point for the bank.Take stirling TC'S (why pay exchange rates twice?),and 100 or 200GBP in TT$.Have safe journey, from sunny Castara,Bye Bye David

Hi,
Thanks for all the help and advice. Will try to take sufficient TT$ to last for a few days!.
Very envious David in sunny Castara, on this cold damp December evening. Still, its one less day to go 'til we go.
Thanks again,
Sue B
