Hi I keep reading that Tobago is out of the usual hurricane system. But.. Wasn't the Coco Reef hotel affected by a hurricaane in the last few years? Do you know when did this occur and what was the damage to the island? We're planning to visit in September and are just a little apprehensive!

Thanks

Hi Cas

Yes, Tobago is well south of the normal Caribbean hurricane belt. However, like anywhere else, they can get hit by the very occasional freak hurricane (as can we, here in England, as the events of October 1987 proved). The damage that you referred to (reported in our 2000 review of the Coco Reef, and elsewhere) was the result of Hurricane Lenny which battered the Leeward Caribbean islands between 16th/19th November 1999. Tobago was not hit by the hurricane itself, but by huge seas and surge floods or tidal waves caused by the hurricane. The damage in Tobago was therefore almost totally restricted to the shorefront along the Caribbean coastline.

From your point of view, I would totally forget about the risk of hurricanes. Its not something that I would give a seconds thought to. Honest! Have a great time – I know you will.
