Our honeymoon in Tobago

Post by Helen F »

Hi, I have at last sat down to write this...sorry it has taken so long, returned from Tobago at the end of July, but in true Tobago style didn't feel like rushing!!!
Anyway, we stayed at the Coco Reef and we really couldn't fault it, the staff (particularly Carla!), service and cleanliness were second to none. Food was lovely, although after two weeks of eating far too much, it did eventually get repetitive. The only disappointment with regards to the food was the Saturday evening buffet, which was luke warm/cold. So the follwoing week we went to the Pelican, which is just across the road...delicious! The Coco Restaurant was okay, but the restaurant in the main hotel was far better. The room we stayed in was lovely, although you have to request to have tea/coffee facilities in your room. We had WELCOME written in petal leaves on the bed when we arrived, along with fruit and champagne. It was my husbands birthday whilst we were there and I had ordered a cake from the hotel (which was lovely), from this, when we returned to our room after it had been cleaned, a staff member had also made a HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign, again made from petals. We stayed All Inclusive...and it really was...our bill at the end of the fortnight was £2.90 for a phone call home!!! And we drank everything! Although, be aware the cocktails are very strong! One tip, don't get your laundry done at the hotel, there is a laundrette next to the hotel, who do a serice wash at a much more reasonable price!
We went on the island tour (with Louis...who was fab!). This took us on a whistle stop tour of the whole island. Louis would stop where ever we wanted, the tour included swimming at Englishmans Bay, a visit to the waterfall and lunch at Gemmas (again was okay, but not the fabulous food that we had been led to believe). Would recommend this tour, but be aware that some tours only cover 1/2 the island at a time. With Louis we set off at about 9am and returned back to the hotel at about 6pm so was a really full day. We also went on the Bucco reef/nylon pool/barbeque trip which unfortunately was not so good, the snorkelling around the hotel was of better quality and we found the state of the reef very disturbing. The barbeque was slightly worrying. One 'chef' disappeared into the bushes, came back fastening his trousers and then proceeded to cook...hence to say we didn't eat anything! The other trip that we went on was the visit to Little Tobago, which was much better for snorkelling and the guides were very knowledgable, fun and friendly. They joined us snorkelling showing us different coral and fish, yet ensuring that we did not damage the coral.
We had one bad experience with a local, who turned nasty because we wouldn't buy anything, but apparantly he is known to the police and they are on his case! Everybody else was very friendly! Oh yes and the weather was fab (don't believe the forecasts that you get on the internet, they relate more to Trinidad, we had one dull day and a couple of quick showers...other that that it was hot, hot, hot!
Anyway, I am sure that I have forgotten lots of things to tell you, we did so much, whatever we write here would not do the place justice, it is a beautiful island with beautiful people to match and I would recommend it to anybody..hence to say we will be returning...and it will be back to the Coco Reef (incidently there were two families who had booked the Hilton, didn't like it and changed to the Coco Reef!).
Oh one huge disappointment...we flew with Excel Air and would never fly with them again, although people who were in the first class thought it was okay, the plane was really old and it had to be grounded when we arrived in Tobago, the inflight entertainment and food msut have been the same age as the plane!
A big thank you to all the information that we were able to gain on this website!
Helen.

Hi Helen
Glad you had such a wonderful honeymoon.
I am going to Tobago - Coco-reef for three weeks in Feb and it was good to hear your glowing comments on the place!
Could you tell me how you booked your trip with Louis, was he a taxi driver!
I will be looking for someone who can take us on a trip alone and not with a load of other tourists, could he do this?
Did you get out of the hotel much at night and if so where were the best places to go within walking distance or a short cab ride? I can't see us staying in the hotel every night for three weeks!!
What was the entertainment like?
Thanks for the tip on the launderette, my old man will be pleased that I won't have to take three suitcases full of clothes. He He!
Any more little bits of info?
Cheers

Firstly let me tell you how jealous I am!!!! We went for two weeks and wished that we had made it three!
We booked Louis through our tour rep (Hayes and Jarvis), our first trip included just four of us, but the visit to Little Tobago included a minibus full. I must say, although we initially felt we would have preferred to go it alone, it really was fun with more people. Louis insists that the tours he takes involve only people of the same country, so that there is no language barrier. Other people that we met just hired a taxi for the day (ask Kevah at the hotel to arrange this, apparantly it is reasonable and you can go where you like for the day!). We personally didn't go out much during the evening, but there is a Sunday school evening where all the locals go ( but doesn't get going until midnight). Appartantly there is somewhere to go every night (different themes) but ask the luggage carriers at the hotel to find out the best places. The pelican bar across the road from the hotel did lovely food and also had entertainment of an evening. There is entertainment at the Coco Reef but it finishes at 10pm!! Some of the acts were good, some were very similar.
One word of advice, remembering that we went out of season..there isn't enough sunbeds with shade and in true british style people were up very early (6am onwards) to save their seats!!!!! Although I understand that the hotel is planning to provide more parasols. The laundrette charged £4 a load for a service wash and was ready in a couple of hours (although this didn't include ironing). I think you would get a couple of pairs of socks washed at the hotel for the same price!!!!
Anyway, hope you have a fabulous time and remember Helen and Vince to Carla....make sure you check out her Carla Specials (cocktails), although very lethal!!!
Enjoy!
Helen

Sunday School is just a name for a big street fair/party held every Sunday night in Buccoo. The fun starts much earlier than midnight, and you don't want to miss it. There are vendors and steel drum bands by 8:00. The crowd is a mix of tourists and locals, and everyone is having a good time. By about 10:00, the steel drum music band packs up and a DJ starts in. I think most of the people who stay on into the night are well on their way to being drunk by then. We are in our 50's, and we stayed until the switch to DJ music. It was a lot of of fun, and we'd recommend it.

I don't know exact distances Lesley, but you will have to get a taxi to Sunday School. It is held in Buccoo which is on the Carribean side of the island. It isn't a huge distance and taxi's are cheap. Make sure you book your driver for the return trip though, it is often more difficult to get a taxi home, but if you book the taxi from the initial trip there you will be fine.

As far as getting out of the hotel goes, there are loads of places to go...
within walking distance you have, Cafe Coco, The Kariwak, Bonkers at Toucan Inn, Dillons, The Pelican and Cafe Iguana for food. If you want a drink and some fun with the locals go to Crystals which is just across the road from the Coco Reef. For a fantastic cocktail go to either The Kariwak or Bonkers. Any of the above are within 10 minutes walking distance.

For tours etc, you should try Harris MacDonald, he is a lifeguard at Store Bay which is directly beside Coco Reef and he is there most days. He usually calls into resorts in the evening, but I don't know if he calls to Coco Reef. Look him up on the beach though, he is a huge man with a huge laugh and he is probably one of the most friendly people on the island!!

Have a great time...

Hi Joe
Thanks for all the information on the bars, sounds like we're gonna have fun. What time does it starting getting lively and are there particular ones to go to on certain nights? I will definitley try a cocktail or six!
Harris MacDonald???????????? Hmmm! Does he come from your part of the woods? I will hunt him down for a tour of the island!
Thanks again for the good info Joe, it all helps save time when you're not familiar with the place.
Cheers

That is exactly what I said about Harris when I heard his name!!! But no there is absolutely no Scottish blood in his veins!! You will find a lot of people in Tobago with British and Irish sounding names, eg Paula O'Neill who runs Salsa Kitchen in Scarborough (my fav restaurant which I forgot to mention above!!). It apparently goes back to when Tobago was a British Colony and the natives were held in slavery. A lot of Tobagonian women had children fathered by the colonists. To cut a long story short a lot of Tobagonians ended up with British surnames taken from their owners.

To be honest I can't remember what nights were good in what places, but most places will close quite early (eg 10.30) so my advice is eat early and start socialising early to get the most from the night!! It is not a party atmosphere like you get in the Greek Islands or Ibiza, it is a lot more sedate, so again be warned. Most places are all about sitting back, relaxing, and enjoying the atmosphere.
