Tobago help needed
Hello, I am planning our honeymoon and we are currently thinking of going to Tobago for two weeks and staying at Sandcastles, Castara. We are going to hire a car and some scooters to get around on, is Castara a good general location for exploring the island? I am a keen scuba diver and heard the reefs in Buccuco are good, is it an easy drive from Castara?

hello lazlo
if you read some of the other topics you will learn that castara is a great place to stay if you desire to have a relaxed time, meeting locals and not looking for an all inclusive style place to stay.
both beaches of castara are great for swimming, we have a reef for snorkelling and a nice surrounding to discover by foot or car. the drive to englishmans bay is short and worth it.
the drive to the other end is about an hour but if you call (or amail) with the hilton dive (world of watersports) might be able to pick you up at castara beach, since they sometimes drop people of there....
ask them, they know about the good reefs of the island, I sure buccoo reef is the most famous and nice, but not the very best. check out with the dive shops. I heard very good things about diving from speyside (blue water inn) as well.
have a lovely honeymoon

Despite the obvious attractions of Castara ... it is in the centre (on the Caribbean side) and therefore perfect for access to all corners of Tobago.
As Brian implies ... no resort facilities (i.e.; luxury) but then I guess you will find the experience of Castara a luxury in itself.
Who needs luxury when there is CASTARA ?
Cheers

Hi Lazlo,
Buccuo is a nice reef but its suffering from to many visiors. I don't think any of the dive centers use it because of all the boat traffic. but there are lots of other places.
The main dive areas are Speyside to the north east about 40 minutes drive and Crown Point to the south about an hour.
I normally stay a Speyside and Bluewaters do an a mornig dive at 10 and an afternoon dive at 1. We often used to get divers in on the afternoon dive who came in from other parts of the Island so that may be a good option if you only plan on a couple of dives during the holiday.
If your just planning to have a holiday with a spot of diving Castara will be fine, if diving is going to be the main point of the holiday it may be a bit far from the main dive centres.
Regards
Kevin
