Dear Fans of Tobago,
Me and a friend of mine - two women - will come to Castara and stay at Young´s House in February. I told my friend, that Castara would be perfectly safe, but I´ve read the Postings and now I am a bit worried. Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves? Or is it enough just to shut the door? Is Young´s House far away from other houses? Thank you very much for your help,
Bettina

Hello Bettina
Welcome aboard!
Yes, there have been a string of petty burglaries in Castara during the past year or so. Locals have been targetted as well as visitors. No violence has been involved.
The culprits turned out to be two young twin brothers. One was caught and sent to prison a couple of months ago. His brother took to the hills to escape capture. However, I did hear - although this is unverified - that he handed himself in recently, rather than cause major problems for his grandmother, who had stood bail for him. If true, maybe there's some home for this low-life. I did also hear that the first twin was caught when he was seen exchanging a large wad of foreign currency in a Scarborough bank.
Anyway, the long and short of it is that both twins are, I believe, now serving custodial sentences and that there have been no further burglaries in the Castara area since the first twin was caught.
So, fear not. You need do nothing except relax and enjoy the village. Simply observe the normal common-sense precautions that you would do anywhere.

Hello Steve,
Thank you for your prompt answer! That´s good news! I´m very glad to hear that. I also want to tell you that you do a very good job with mytobago.info. I don´t like big hotels (I even don´t really like the smaller ones) and you helped me a lot to find a small house. I´m sure, my friend and I will enjoy the stay there.

We stayed in Young's House in October, around the time when the first burglaries happened. You will be looked after very well by Iris, who will give you advice on security and provide you with somewhere safe to lock your valuables. The main bedroom is on the first floor, and you can see other houses from where you are. Just be careful and sensible - all we did was make sure we locked the main door if we were resting, locked everything at night, and didn't leave anything valuable around in view.
I'm sure you will love your time in Castara, we did.
Have a great time.
