looking for experience with scuba diving with currents

Post by KWinoker »

We are planning a family scuba diving trip to Galapagos next summer and would like to get more experience diving with currents. Would Tobago be a good place to do this? Can you recommend a dive operation that would give us the opportunity for 3 to 4 dives a day over 3 days? Safety is important, especially since we will have our 2 boys ages 13 and 15 with us who are very good divers.

Hello

Welcome aboard!

Well, you will most certainly get experience with currents diving in Tobago.

Many of the dive operaters offer schedules with 3 dive a day, but on safety grounds be wary of any that offer 4. As far as I know, none of the Tobago dive services would do this.

A lot will depend upon where you are staying. The best bet is to read our diving articles, available via the Out & About/Activities/Diving menu at the top of every page on the site. The listing for each dive operator generally mention their normal daily dive schedule.

If you don't mind paying a bit extra for a more personalised service, look at Caribstu. We dived with him last month and were most impressed (don't worry Stu - review will be on its way!). He will find the most suitable dive sites for the conditions on the day, is very flexible and will dive from north and south of the island. He will also continue the dive for up to 60 minutes if your air usage is good enough and you have sufficient deco time unlike some other dive operators who will automatically bring you up at 45 minutes.

As for currents, I'm a bit of a wimp and not a strong swimmer, so we didn't do the dives with the most current, but most dives we did from Speyside could be classified as drift dives. Tobago should certainly give you plenty of opportunities to prepare for diving with currents.

By the way, I think Stuart gets pretty booked up, so I would recommend contacting him sooner rather than later.

Thank you Jo B. We checked with CaribStu and unfortunately he is currently booked up for the time we will be in Tobago. So we are looking at diving with Tobago Dive Experience and can hopefully get the dives we want. K Winoker

Hi K.W,

If you are after fast current drift dives Speyside is the better option almost all of the dives are drifts of varing speeds up to around 5 knots +. Don't expect a dive centre to send you on anything fast as soon as you arrive as they like to check you out first. Flying Manta

There are good drift dives off of Crown Point too but they are a bit harder too find if you let the dive centre know that what your after they should be willing to help.
For Speyside as you can't get Stuart, try Aquamarine at the BWI and at Crown Point Undersea Tobago at Coco Reef.

Regards
Kevin
