Tobago/tobacco

Post by David Watkins »

Juat found an interesting peace of trivia while looking for something else.
It is generally accepted that Tobago is a corruption of tobacco, this apparrently not so.
Tavaco is a particular type of wood that was used by the Carib indians to make long smoking pipes, apparrently it was naturally hollow.
The Caribs therefore called it the Tavaco Island and used their long pipes or Tavaca to smoke cohibo(tobacco).
