A book about Tobago?

Post by Lauri Hytti »

I was curious if anyone would know a book to recommend to buy about Tobago? One that would just have information & history of the country or maps or anything really. Thanks again

Cheers David.
A bit of a too tens book for me still, but probly after I actually visit the place I would wanna buy the book and findout more. I was just thinking of a more turisty book that just has all the general info about tobago and roots and such on it. Pretty much this site... except just in a book format. Just prefer reading stuff from books and so I could take it along with me :)

Hi Lauri

If you'd like to wait a year, you can have an up-to-date copy of myTobago in print. The copy and proof editors are primed and ready to go, the front cover designed - and everybody is waiting for me to decide on what articles we are going to include. With an estimated 250,000 words of articles and reviews on the site, we obviously can't include everything and so it's going to require major work to put together. Sadly, as much as I would love to get on with it, paying work must come first. So much for being semi-retired!!!!!

In the meantime, I would recommend the Rough Guide. I'm not a grate fan of the Rough Guide series, simply becuase they are never up to date and recommendation is entirely based on financial considerations, but until we can do something about it, it is certainly the best guide out there.

Rough Guide

Post by Bob White »

Hope we don't have to wait too long for the publication Steve...... just imagine the millions you make will enable full retirement.

Until then the Rough Guide on T&T is as good as any I have seen on the bookshelves.

I wish, Bob. To be honest, the profits are unlikely to buy a week's holiday in Tobago. The market is so small and the publication market so dominated by the multiples, who deal in thousands of copies, that there's NO chance of a decent publishing deal. Apart from that, the biggest complaint with conventional books is that they are obsolete by the time you buy them. I've decided to go a different way and use the wonders of digital technology to print on demand. That way the book will always be up to date. Haven't quite figured out how to update the pages once delivered though  The print quality should be every bit as good as the Rough Guide or similar, but the publishing costs mean that I'll be lucky to get a fiver a copy - and only anticipate a few hundred sales a year. Still, its the logical extension from the site and I fancy giving it a go.

A Definitive Guide Book

Post by Bob White »

I can see the problem re keeping up to date with restaurants and accommodation, but I think you can also offer a substantial amount of definitive island information which changes as slowly as Tobago itself.

I have never believed the Rough Guide has ever captured the 'heart and soul' of Tobago which I think this site has done. A hard copy of myTobago gets a vote (and an order) from me! :D

Hi Folks

Thanks for your support. OK, let's get serious about it. As I say, I've already arranged commercial copy and proof editors and had my designer prepare a front cover - but now they are all waiting on me to produce the basic content so that they can put it all together.

My biggest problem is deciding what to put in. There will probably be two editions - a larger, fuller edition in full colour, plus a smaller 'pocket' edition in black and white.

So, suggestions more than welcome.

Great idea Steve. Could really do with all the forum info to hand whenever I am there. Might help my luggage allowance aswell if i dont have to carry so many print outs with me! When you set the print format, please consider those of us who have reached that "certain age" when glasses become an essential item for any day trip (just for the small print of course  ). Joking aside Steve I would love to have both versions when they are available so no pressure but I am flying in July!
Thanks for your hard work as allways
Gill :)

Btw, We could all bring a plate of something and a bottle to the Book Launch Event!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Steve,

Is it not something you could do as an e-book? You could, obviously, still sell it - perhaps through the website!? It'd save you the printing costs!!

Just a thought!!

Lisa.

always though that travel books should be some kind of e-book. keep em updated all the time...
talked to some of the rsearchers of travel books and it is really a pain, because when they do the resaerch and there are too many copys of the old book in stock the print is delayed until stocks go down and the nformation is obsolete at day of print already... a shame...
by the way, the 2007 rough guide should be better. met the guy who did it and he took his research very seriously... never heard of them being a book where you have to pay for your entry (wit a restaurant or guest house) like others are...
keep our fingers crossed for your project steve, would be a shame to waste all this knowledge collected over the years and people walk around with useless books here instead...
