First Timers To Tobago - Advice & Suggestions, Please!
Hi all,
We will be flying out to Tobago on 10th August for a 15 day AI stay at the Turtle Beach Hotel. As it is our first time to anywhere quite so 'tropical', we want to make sure that we see, and do, as much as possible during our stay on Tobago.
We would appreciate all your suggestions and advice on trips, activities, eating out etc etc. Where and where not to go, what and what not to do etc etc.
Hopefully, my daughter and I will get some serious fishing done while we are there, so suggestions on tackle welcomed. Also snorkelling, and should we be buying our own kit to take with us.
Regards
Neil & Lesley

Hi
Just read through these pages - a font of information. It's how I started and had an amazing time so much so we have booked for the next two years. First thing, hire a car, Turtle Beach is very beautiful but empty - everyone seems to sit around the pool. Get out there and enjoy .
Regards Sandra

Hi Neil & Lesley
Sandra is right, hire a car for at least some of your trip, don't get tied to your hotel. There is loads of info on here, so read lots, get a rough idea of what you would like to do, then 'go with the flow', Tobago is so laid back that you can't help but relax, I prefer not to cram too much into a holiday there - and it gives me an excuse to keep going back! (not that i need one).
I don't know anything about fishing kit, however we do always take our own snorkels and masks, gear is always available to use on boat trips, but maybe its just me, I prefer to know who else has had my snorkel in their mouth!
Enjoy your holiday,
Linda

Some info on fishing tackle here -

Snorkel gear - I think the same question has cropped up a few times before and the consensus is to buy at home. If you type 'buying snorkel gear' into the search facility near the top of the page, you should get a list of some previous posts on the subject.
Cheers

Take only photos - leave only footprints. I like that concept.

Hi Neil and Lesley, I learned to snorkel with the crew of a glass bottomed boat, They lent me the gear and thier help was of course "all part of the service"
."Have you ever seen a shark?" one guy asked me. "no" I replied, "Well theres a Rasta shark in the water with you right now girl" he said
This year I am taking my own gear which was bought with no hassle on line after a Google search. I will feel much better knowing that I am it's only user.
I'm sure you will love Tobago,You can't help it

Hi again,
Think we will heed your advice and hire a car. Should we hire for the full 2 weeks or maybe just for the second week. We don't want to spend all our time driving around the island but equally, we don't want to waste money and have a hire car sitting idle in the car park.
From the reviews, Thrifty Car Rental seems to come out tops, even if they are a little more expensive than the others. We would appreciate your comments & advice on which rental firm to go for.
Kindest Regards

Hi Neil and Lesley, I would hire a car in the middle of your stay, 1 weeks hire should be enough. I presume that Rex Turtle also offers a shuttle service to Pigeon Point and maybe elsewhere, so you could take advantage of that if you fancied a change of scenery from your hotel.

N &L definitely hire acar for at least a few days. The advantage of driving yourself rather than being taken in a cab or with a tour is that you can go where you like and stop when you like.
