What a great website, very informative and entertaining. My girlfriend and I are planning an early December getaway and want to go to Tobago and Mustique. Since we have never visited Tobago, your help would be appreciated. If we stay at the Coco Freef, are we close to any rain forests and nature locations, if not, can you suggest a place to stay that is close to a rain forest. Thanks....

Hi Paul, To be honest Tobago is so small it is only about half an hours drive to the rainforest from Coco Reef. So wherever you are everything is at easy reach. I don't know of any places actually in the rainforest although Steve will be able to advise you better on that.

Thanks for your kind words. If you stay at the Coco Reef, or any other hotel, you will be close enough to the rain forests and nature locations. As Niki said (Niki, even sad old sods like me don’t monitor the forum at 8am), everywhere in Tobago is close – the island is only 26x8 miles. The Coco Reef is located in the flat south-western Crown Point area of the island, near to the airport. All the best hotels are in this region. There are no hotels or accommodation of any type within the rain forest, but various budget and “eco” hotels relatively close by. The Blue Waters Inn at Speyside is the nearest hotel to the rain forest that would interest me, but it’s not in the same category as the Coco Reef. However, it is a beautiful 1-2 hour drive from Crown Point to the rain forest proper and you will be in gorgeous hilly terrain within less than 30 minutes of leaving the hotel.

You will probably want to hire a car or jeep and explore yourself. Whilst it’s fine to drive over the one road through the rain forest, you should not just park up and wander off on your own. There are no dangerous animals or snakes, but you could get lost very easily indeed. As this is your first visit, I would strongly recommend taking a guided tour of the rain forest to learn something of its many secrets and history. Based upon the feedback I’m getting from correspondents, I am increasingly recommending the use of Yes Tourism (Pigeon Point Road, Crown Point) for tours. I haven’t tried them myself yet, but I shall certainly do so on my next visit.
