Day Trip to Little Tobago - Review

Post by Simon »

Patrick from Yes Tourism led us on a day trip to Little Tobago.

Little Tobago is a small island just off Speyside and is renowned for its bird and wildlife - it is also a reserve. I would think that the island is spectacular in the breeding season which I believe is March/April time when it apparently comes alive with nesting birds.

From the quayside to the opposite Atlantic coast of the island is a steep up and down path which takes about an half an hour to walk, at an easy pace, each way. The Atlantic coast has stunning views, amongst which was the bizarre sight of an abundant growth of cactus plants. We were lucky enough to see a nesting Booby bird, rare for this time of year. Amongst other finds, were plenty of large lizards, land crabs in shells and a variety of frigate birds, terns etc.

On the return boat trip we were given the opportunity to go snorkelling, but by this time, at the end of our two week stay, everybody was so clean and tired from so much snorkelling that we gave it a miss - probably our loss as this area has the best and most unspoilt reefs in Tobago. However the crew of the glass bottom boat gave us a very knowledgeable guide to the coral and fish life that we could see - amongst which was the largest example of caribbean rain coral found - it has taken 1000 years to grow to its present size!

We then progressed to Jemma's Treehouse restaurant for a delicious lunch - all part of the inclusive package.

Patrick very kindly then took us back down the caribbean side of the island at our request - despite the fact that he was running out of time.

We have driven round the island previously on an earlier visit to Tobago and the great thing this time was to have Patrick point out so many things that we had missed before - or just not simply known about.

This is a great trip - especially to obtain a informed flavour of what Tobago is all about and a good way to get to the great institution that is Jemma's.
