New direct BWIA North American flights update

Post by Glyn Kirpalani »

Dear all

Quote from yesterday's Tobago News:

"He [Tourism Secretary Neil Wilson at the World Travel Show, London] met with BWIA...CEO Nelson Tom Yew on Wednesday to finalise the airline's plans to service Tobago with its flights to Toronto, New York and Miami from January 28th".

These flights are proposed to be additional to the sole direct ex north american flight from Washington at present, aimed at raising the number of annual foreign visitors to Tobago to 100,000 per year.

For those of us who do not wish Tobago to become too "discovered" and busy, there is no immediate cause for panic since in comparison to similar size islands such as Barbados this figure is tiny - can anyone confirm Barbados' annual tourist figure at approx 2 million? Cyprus attracts 11 million, although a lot larger, but just a comparator for perspective.

NYC to Tobago direct

Post by Joana »

We are travelling to Tobago for the first time via NYC direct BWIA. Will let you know how it goes. We are staying for 11 days in Feb. and can't wait. Upon telling friends/family we are going to Tobago, most do not know what or where Tobago is. In all honesty, prior to my Caribbean research, I never thought of coming to Tobago either. For us, it is all about the eco-tourism, and travelling to a less developed island. We are from NYC and do not need to be around a lot of other tourists. We are staying at Sandcastles in Castara and can't wait. This site has been invaluable in our research, and has confirmed our research that Tobago is the place for us.

Hi Joana

Hope the flight goes well - please let us know how long it takes etc IDC.

Latest quotes from the week's Tobago News re flights are:

Summary: New terminal build is finally due to be started next month, a year late - [miracles will never cease! ]

Martin Air is considering a direct flight from Amsterdam.

US Air is considering a direct flight from USA.

Condor wants to add a second winter flight from a different German City.

Virgin Atlantic wanted to add a second flight "but was concerned over the delay in completing the expansion of the airport".

"...BWIA will begin direct weekly services between Crown Point and Toronto, New York and Miami with its 737s from February 5th."

So, anyone with plans to open a US tex-mex or steak-house restaurant should get rolling, ready for the friendly invasion by our North American cousins.

All the best
