Music!
I'd love some recommendations as to where I might pick up some good local CD's in Tobago. I'm not looking for specific artists, just wondering if anyone's been to a particular shop or stand where they had some good luck browsing and picking up CD's of great soca and calypso.
My husband and I will be in the Crown Point area for a couple of days in February before heading off to Speyside for a week; I'm hoping to find what we're looking for in those first several days. We'll have a bungalow at the Blue Waters Inn, and have some travel speakers that we like to set up in such situations, to set the atmosphere with local music and cocktails. (Never fear, fellow travelers! We play our music SOFTLY, and in fact always check to make sure it's not audible to others nearby).
Thanks!
Karin

When in Tobago last February I purchased some CD's by mixed artists fom the record shop in Scarborough about £6.0 each as far as I can remember then found out they were copies but I was pleased with the sound and quality.
When returning in June I purchased more CD's from the stall in Scarborough on the main road by market but when played a few of them were jumping quite badly, cant remember how much I paid but for copies that jumped they were not cheap.I als purchased on Store Bay Beach cd from Keith 'Destiny' Waldron who was the singer and songwriter on the CD very good.
I will be back in Feb for carnival (can't wait counting days ) to see what other music I can puchase.
Regards Chris.

Oh come on, Anthony dear boy.
The Tobagonians love their music and play it as loudly as they can ... with bass !!
I have driven all around the Island and almost every village will have a party going on at some point in the day ... let alone the touristy areas !!
Not to mention the fancy colourful (NOISEY) cars booming away along the roads.
I assume that my recommendation to try 'Sunday School' would not meet your approval.
Enjoy as you like my friend.

I definitely don't think you're being rude, and I most certainly appreciate your concern. I myself have been on the other end (Jimmy Buffett blaring from an overwater bungalow on Bora Bora- NOT relaxing, and certainly a case in point of the intrusive properties of sound over water!)Anthony P wrote:PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE leave your travel speakers at home. I don't mean to be rude, but everyone goes to Tobago to get AWAY from intrusive things like that. You may think that it is adding atmosphere. IT IS NOT - it is just false and highly annoying to others. If you MUST listen to music, then please use earphones/headphones so that you don't disturb others. Music and sound travels a long way across water and on those peaceful, tranquil beaches. PLEASE don't spoil the very atmosphere that we all seek in Tobago.
As I mentioned, we use these speakers only within the confines of our own bungalow, NOT on the beaches. Also as I mentioned, we always do a check around our bungalow to ensure that the sound is literally inaudible to someone strolling within 15 feet. We do this because we ourselves are concerned about intruding on how others may choose to enjoy their time. I most definitely do not mean to define the "atmosphere" for everyone nearby- only for ourselves, on the deck in our bungalow.
I both share your concerns, and feel they are unwarranted in this case!
Thanks,
Karin

I agree with you when I was in Tobago in June there were parties going on every where even the fisherman on Turtle Beach erected giant speakers on the beach and were partying and the other end of the beach at Black Rock it was someone birthday and they also had giant speakers and a party on the beach.I myself thinks this adds to the atmosphere as I love the music ,people and there way of life.

Ooh, I can't wait! I love a beach party, and those thumping soca rhythms! And I love it all the more because it's their own musical expression, not some tourist's! In truth, it simply wouldn't be the same coming out of my wee travel speakers- neither culturally nor acoustically appropriate!Christine Nelson wrote:Paul

If you want a laugh, below is a picture of me enjoying some polynesian music in a bungalow in French Polynesia- witness the microscopic speaker set-up on the table! Convenient, but hardly up to the job of inspiring a wild beach party!

Thanks for the advice regarding where to pick up some music, Chris. I believe I'll try to track down that record shop in Scarborough you mentioned. Is it by any chance near the market? I ask because a jaunt to the market is already on my "to-do" list.

Good gawd. Every sentence in those first two paragraphs ends in an exclamation point. I am indeed QUITE excited about going to Tobago, and picking up some music. But I must admit that to see it expressed so is a tad embarassing.K Travers wrote: Ooh, I can't wait! I love a beach party, and those thumping soca rhythms! Hello Karin
I'm sorry that I've disabled the edit function, but you can always contact me direct and I will make any changes for you.
The reason for disabling the edit function is quite simple. It is to prevent manipulation of the board.
The forum is strictly moderated and I go to great lengths to ensure that all posts are genuine. We are particularly on the lookout for unscrupulous establishments who pose as visitors praising their own establishment or criticising competitors. There are also cases of visitors who post malicious or libellous posts for real or imagined grievance. Shortly after launching the forum, someone posted a mildly critical post of an establishment and then went back some weeks later and edited it into a quite malicious post. Hence the decision to suppress the editing facility. The system sends me an email copy of all posts, so I can vet them within seconds, but sadly this feature does not extend to notifying me when posts are edited. This is something I wish to look into and I will glad switch the facility back on if I manage to work around the problem.
In the meantime, may I suggest the "Preview" function. Using this before "Submit" allows you to see and proof-read the post.

Karin, sorry if I misjudged you. I thought you were intending to play the music on the beach, not at your bungalow. Sorry if I over-reacted, but during our last visit we were next door to two American families with three teenagers. They played rap at max on the beach from late morning until dusk every day. They tried the same in their rooms until the early hours, until the hotel put a stop to it. A bit of nice steel band music, soca or calypso is one thing on the beach, but gangster and hardcore rap was out of order. They became highly abusive when a guest pointed out that it was not appropriate with young kids around. It was alright for us because we were out sailing most days, but I know how much it ruined other people's holidays.
Paul, I’m sorry if I sounded like a kill-joy. We’re actually in our late-30s and I'm a sound engineer, so I’m not the old boy your might think. We spend every Sunday night at Sunday School and the cockerels are crowing before we get home, so I agree with your recommendation. It’s just that there’s a time and a place. We always go to one or two beach BBQs and let loose with everyone else, but when you spend your life on a recording studio sound desk, its nice to get away from it all for a while and let your ears cool.
