Transporting Motorized Wheelchair

Post by LSpell »

Hi! We will be vacationing in Tobago from April 20-27th.
We are trying to figure out whether or not to take the ferry to Tobago or a flight. My elderly mother will be bringing her, rather heavy, motorized wheelchair.

1. Is it possible to have this transported on the plane from POS to Tobago or must we take the ferry?
2. Do you have any advice for handicapped visitors? places to go? or to avoid?

Thanks!
Leah

Hi Leah,
I would think Caribbean Airline could handle your mother's wheelchair....give them a call or send an email (they do reply to emails, just slow some times). There are always a number of people requiring wheelchairs on our flights from Toronto. However it's not too common on the air bridge. If you are concerned about getting her on and off the small plane used for the air bridge...don't. I had the unfortunate chance to try out there little carrier when I broken my ankle in two places when we were staying in Tobago.
Regarding the ferry....I'm not sure they have an elevator (if required). Lots of stairs up to the passenger deck. Could anyone help Leah out with more info.
Cheers,
Carol

I am 99% sure they have an elevator as they certainly don't carry all the food and drinks they sell
up the stairs. But i will double-check this afternoon, when i go up on the boat and then let you know.

Here is the update now. Sorry for the delay.
I spoke to one of the officers. The wheelchair access is from the upper car deck directly to the
passenger area. In order to reach to the upper car deck, the passenger in the wheelchair has to come early
and roll up the ramps BEFORE the cars are been parked there.
Upon arrival the person has to wait until all the vehicles have left the car decks.
