No Martinair?

Post by Johanna Y. »

Hi all,

I've been planning, hoping and praying for a trip to Paradise next winter and found it even more difficult than a few years back :? . Does anybody know have Martinair cut down their flight from Amsterdam permanently or what???

There are a lot more options from London but does anybody know whether is it possible to purchase a flight ticket from London to Tobago by someone who doesn't live Great Britain, for example XL? Do they use e-tickets? The travel agencies in Finland don't sell tickets for XL flights.

Hi Johanna
When I was looking for a ticket in February, the travel agency told me this.
KLM did own a part of Martin Air last year but now they have the major shares, and as both KLM and Martin Air did have the same final destination, KLM simply cut off Tobago and the the MA route!

I don´t know if KLM will have Tobago on their route, but I´ll ask a person in Tobago next month, he should know something as his office was an agent for Martin Air.

This year I´m using BA but that route takes longer time, first Stockholm/Arlanda to England/Heathrow, one night in the Gatwick area and than BA from Gatwick the following morning.
I´m leaving Sweden June 25 for four weeks in T&T!

Hi Ronald,

Thanks for the information. Yes, I agree with the BA route. It is much more complicated to go through London because there are no flights from Helsinki to Gatwick so it is always the issue of changing airports and the inbound flight requires accommodation in Gatwick.

Please keep me (and others as well) posted about the KLM flight if you get any news :)

I am sure Gisela (Shorty) has flown from Germany via London, taking XL on to Tobago, so you must be able to book tickets from outside the UK. I think Gisela is in Tobago right now, lucky lady, but she may well see your post anyway.

Hi Johanna

Sorry, I missed your first post. Yes, I believe you can book all the UK flights outside the UK. For XL flights, just use the reservation system at XL.com.

Hi Johanna

I´ve sometimes using UK Charter to Tobago when I did have problems to find something else with BA, or before, with Martin Air.

These times I´d go with Ryan Air to Stanstead, sometimes their tickes are really sheap.
From Stansted I use the bus route, National Express, they go via Heathrow down to Gatwick, but that isn´t their final destination.
Not far from Gatwick is the Corner House, a guest house, divided into two houses. The main building has rooms with own bath and the other one with shared baths. The food at the restaurant is OK. They also have a free pick-up service at both Gathwick south and north.

From Gatwick I leave the following morning with Excel, but I have bought my tickets from Golden Caribbean, they use XL down to Tobago. This is their website: http://www.goldencaribbean.co.uk/

The Corner House has this e-mail address: [email protected]
But I use to call: +44-1293-78 45 74

In all, a Ryan Air ticket + bus forward & back + and one night at the Corner House, was sometimes better compared with KLM/Martin Air, but not always, and I also had to be in UK one day before. But using RyanAir + XL was sometimes the only choise for me.

The major problem is, as it is two different companies, you aren´t protected in case XL get problems in Tobago so you miss your RyanAir flight! You will have to find and buy a new ticket, and that isn´t always so easy!

There´s also possible to use Condor from Frankfurt, but I don´t like that flight at all. An economy ticket with XL is like Business in Condor! You get much more for the money with XL, and more/better food & service too.

But, this year I´ll go with BA, so I´ll have one night in UK on the way down.

God Luck with your ticket, I´m leaving next month!

Hi All,

I'm not sure how convenient it is, but Condor (formerly Thomas Cook) are offering flights on a Sunday from Frankfurt (which I assume is easier to get to than London for some of you!) . It's listed on their website (http://www.condor.com), so I assume it's current!!

Thank you all for your comments. Yes, I have been aware of Condor flying from Frankfurt but unfortunately it is the most expensive one although the easiest at the moment. If I buy a ticket from a finnish travel agency, the cheapest one is close to 1200 euros per person, and I think it is quite a lot comparing to Lufthansa flying to Frankfurt from Helsinki three times a day less than 100 euros per person. But then again if I buy the tickets separately, I'm on my own if the flights gets delayed. I've never flewn with Condor before but like Ronald said, I have heard people commenting Condor the same way.

Ronald, I have thought about Ryanair/XL combination also because it is really cheap but the problem is that the Ryanair schedule to Finland sucks! From Tampere to Stansted is ok - very late at night but the problem is that it is the same time on the way back and all the flights from Tobago arrive early in the morning and I don't want to be stuck in London all day on my way home.

Altogether it is good to know that XL is also an option for me. Now I just have to decide what I want to do #-o (and how much Hubby is willing to bear with me :) )

Hi Johanna

Yes, the flights arrive early in the morning to Gatwick, and mostly I use to be outside around 10:00 - 11:00 as the custom control is easy for EU-sitizens.

The busses from National Express pass Gatwick once per hour (at least as I remember) and the trip up to Stanstead can take 2 - 2,5 hours all dependeing on the traffic. The do repairs on roads during summer time in UK too!

I never go to London and wait there, I prefer to go directly to Stanstead as soon I can and stay there waiting for RyanAir. I use to choose a late afternoon departure from Stanstead to be sure that I don´t miss the flight.
If you have too long waiting time in Stanstead, you always have SAS Radisson, a 5 minutes walk from Stanstead, if you want to take an expensive nap! The restaurants there are also better compared with teh Airport.
The outside area with the check-in desks in Stanstead isn´t always so nice, but there are some restaurants and coffie shops so you don´t have to starve! But after passing the security, the area inside is really nice, I was surprised when I did see that the first time I was using RyanAir.

Maybe you should ask your agency about BA, my BA-ticket this year cost me 9200SEK, incl. extra taxes. You will have to change airport even with BA. I go from Arlanda to Heathrow, to their new terminal, a NA-bus to Gatwick and one night at the Corner House. Leaving with BA following morning from Gatwick north.
This way I don´t have problem if the BA-fligt from Tobago will have technical problem or something like that, it´s still BA all the way back home!

No KLM/Martinair to Tobago

Post by Ronald »

Hi

I'm in Tobago right now and I was talking to the former agent for Martin Air, and he told me this.
Since KLM bought Martin Air they cut off Martin Air route to Tobago and he doesn't believe that KLM will place Tobago on their map again. KLM/Air France has lost millions so Tobago isn't important at all for them.
From England we therefore have BA or Excel to Tobago, even Virgin Atlantic if you have a bankcard connected to an English bank. We can of cource also choose BA to PoS and than go across by air or sea, but KLM/Martin Air is history!

No Martinair, Frankfurt London?

Post by Ronald »

Hi Johanna

I would say, choose BA from London. Last year I had to go with Condor and I'll never choose Condor again, only in case of emergency! I don't know how BA goes to/from Finland, but this is how I travel this year.

- Stockholm/Arlanda to London/Heathrow terminal 5 (mid day flight from ARN)
- Bus National Express down to Gatwick North
- One night at the Corner House Hotel, a small place just few minutes away, they have free pick-up, using free yellow phone on the lower level outside the terminal
- London Gatwick North/Tobago via Antigua

BA is much better compared with Condor, to go Word Travel (economic) with BA is like go Business Class with Condor.

Welcome to Tobago!
