At the RTB, do the rooms have safes?

Hi Marc,

When I was there, 15 months ago, the rooms did not have safes but there was a security box room behind reception. I got a security box but I can't remember whether or not I had to pay for it.

There are no safes in the rooms, but there is the facility at reception. To be honest though, we did not feel we needed a safe.

I'm thinking more about whether to take my iPod or not. Love the idea of my music with me, hate the idea of having to have it with me all the time! (IYSWIM).

We took digital camera, digi camcorder etc and left them happily in the room when we went to the beach.

One afternoon, I left a pair of shoes on the beach (they were inbetween two sunbeds) and I forgot to pick them up. They were still on the beach the next morning - exactly where I had left them. I don't know if that would be the same for an ipod though. The locals probably wouldn't know what one is!!!

I took a photo of a little local girl in a restaurant - she was fascinated to see her picture immediately !

My Dear English Friend,

I totaly resent the comment that you made about local people not knowing what an iPod was. This is a common misconception that tourists have about the local population on this island and probably many other islands of the caribbean. I would therefore like to set things straight once and for all, locals of Tobago are just as intelligent and educated as you and the people of your country are. Almost every home in Tobago has a computer with the net, television sets with cable and yes some of them even have iPods. No matter how poor some locals may look and be they are well educated and know about the world. In fact I must admit that the one thing that the locals don't know much about is the reason why most tourists come to their island with the false myth that they are all stupid and uneducated.

The Locals have some of the best general knowledge I have come across in the world. Whenever I told people in Ireland that we were going to Tobago, they looked at me with very blank expressions, one person even tried to convince me the West Indies were in Indonesia

The locals in Tobago though knew exactly where Ireland was on the map, as well as a lot about the whole Northern Ireland Issue. I am amazed that so many people from the 'developed world' (and I use that term very loosely) still think that the rest of the world is living in the dark ages.

It reminds me of the Americans when they come to Ireland, and they expect to find a famine ridden country, with everyone riding around on 'Donkeys and Carts'.

Cop on Britain, America et al...

I wasn't taking a 'pop' at the locals. The suggestion that they are less intelligent never crossed my mind, Why did it cross yours?

Most of the locals wouldn't know what an ipod is - they don't need anything like that with the wonderful music that they have being carried through the air !

I beg to differ Jill. I think they would have as good an idea as anybody. When was the last time you read a paper in Tobago?? They are constantly advertising the latest mobile phones and computer equipment. It is probably true that, like ourselves, only the very rich or the people with a real need for an iPod would have one, but I think that the majority of the people would at least be aware of the existence of iPods etc.

I think we are going to need the opinion of a local to settle this one

And in Michelles defense this did sound like a 'pop' at the locals

They might be aware of ipods, but would they actually know what one looks like? I doubt it Joe. I've heard of a Head Gasket on a car, but I wouldn't know what one looks like.

The deposit boxes at reception are free to guests and recommended. The problem is where to keep the key.

Keys are lovely inert objects usually but once on soft sand they turn into the most amazing burrowing animals. I have a beach safe that is water proof, hold my specs and some money and I tied the box key to that.

It's anybody's guess, John. This is the quiet time of year when people are more interested in organising their summer hols, so personally I don't think we'll make it until around the middle of next month.

Took my iPod (http://www.apple.com/ipod) and took it in a lilipod case (http://www.lilipods.com/lilipods.html) waterproof, although I only wanted it splash and sand proof!

Loved it, every song I own to hand in Tobago. Bliss!

(and personal).

The plug sockets in the Rex are UK ones and all chargers worked perfectly with no extra gizmos needed.
